Traditional Irish Wedding Reception Customs

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Mary Arnold In a previous article, I listed numerous Irish customs that couples can incorporate into their wedding ceremony. In this followup article, I will describe other Irish customs for a wedding reception. Decorating the Path. In nineteenth century Ireland, it was common for people to decorate the way from the bride’s home to the church on the day of her wedding. Floral garlands, evergreen boughs, lanterns, and torches were often used to lead the way to the church. In Irish Wedding Traditions, Shannon McMahon Lichte offers several suggestions on how this tradition can be adapted for more modern weddings, to help guests find their way to the church and from the church to the reception (42). You could decide to attach flower bouquets to trees and signposts, or less expensive balloons and bows. For a more distinctive Irish touch, you could use Irish symbols such as the Tricolor flag, shamrock, harp, or the Claddaugh to adorn trees and signposts along the way. Reception Decorations. Placing a pot of shamrocks in the center of each table would be very Irish and very festive. But if you prefer traditional flower arrangements, talk to your florist about having flowers native to Ireland, such as the Burnet rose, violets, hydrangeas, foxglove, Bells of Ireland, daisies, Irish orchids, ivy, ferns, and primroses. Food and Drink. Talk to your caterer about serving Irish dishes. You can find numerous recipes in a Irish cookbook at any major bookstore. For drinks, have plenty of Irish whisky and Guinness on hand. Also, make sure your bartender knows how to make Irish cocktails, such as Irish Spring, An Irish Dog, An Irish Highball, An Irish Seaman, An Irish Lady, and Irish Lady Champagne Punch. The recipes for these drinks can be found in Lichte’s Irish Wedding Traditions. Wedding Cake. A traditional Irish wedding cake is fruitcake. If you prefer not to use fruitcake, you can ask your baker to decorate it with Irish symbols, such as swans, a harp, or the Claddaugh and green ribbon and flowers. Music. Music has always been an important part of any celebration in Ireland, and weddings are no exception. Having traditional Irish music at your wedding presents little problem. If you prefer live music, search for Irish musicians in your area. Or if you decide on a disc jockey, prepare a play list to include Irish musicians such as The Chieftains, Celtic Thunder, Gaelic Storm, Da Danaan, Christy Moore, James Galway, U2, The Wild Rovers, Loreena McKennett, Altan, Druid Stone, and Enya, to name a few. Compilations of Irish party and dancing songs are also available for purchase. Two of these are titled “New Irish Dance Party” and “130 Irish Party Songs” by Rego. Toasting. In Ireland, it’s customary for the bride and groom to share a cup for their first drink as man and wife, rather than two separate wineglasses. An internet search can direct you to many sites which sales chalices and goblets with Irish designs. And rather than sharing the usual champagne, why not toast each other with mead? Kissing. In her book, Irish Wedding Traditions, Lichte describes a wonderful variation to the custom of guests clinking a glass with a spoon to induce the bride and groom to kiss. She reports that at a recent Irish wedding, guests were asked to stand up and sing a song or recite a poem with the word “love” in it whenever they wanted the newly-wedded couple to kiss (Lichte 140). This involvement of the guests is in keeping with the ancient Irish tradition of storytelling and merrymaking. Sharing Riches. In Ireland, it is customary for the bride and groom to make a donation to a charity, as it is believed that they will have bad luck in their marriage if they do not. Lichte offers several suggestions for couples to re-create this custom at their own wedding. You may decide to have a supply of Irish pence for you and your spouse to throw to guests when you leave the reception, you could give each guest a small pouch filled with Irish pence and confetti to toss rather than rice, or you both could make a donation to the charity of your choice in your spouse’s name to ensure good luck in your marriage. These are only a few suggestions on how to incorporate Irish customs into your wedding; there are many, many more which can be found in a book on Irish weddings, of which there are several on the market. Rubber Stamps in Wet Plaster Create Dynamite Wall Finishes

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Victoria Larsen A super twist on Raised Plaster Stenciling” that’s easy to do and leaves a great “impression”; Rubber stamps pressed in to the wet plaster.Where Raised Plaster Stenciling creates a design that stands out from the wall, using rubber stamps pressed in to wet plaster creates indentations that give a really different look that creates awesome shadows. There are literally millions of rubber stamp designs in your local craft store, rubber stamp specialty shop or on the Internet that you can choose to create your own designer walls. Choose a large design so that it shows up well on your wall. Consider plant elements such as ferns, leaves, flower heads and so on. Or get crazy and combine a number of designs. If you have high gloss or semi-gloss wall paint currently on your wall, prime with water based primer first. All other paint types need no pre-preparation. Using a wide, flat blade plastic scraper (found in the paint section of your local home or hardware store), smooth an even coat of joint compound (about 1/8″ thick over a 3×3 foot section. Thicker joint compound may result in a blurred impression) on to the wall. Once the area has been covered, randomly stamp your design, pressing it in to the joint compound. You have about 30 minutes before the joint compound begins to dry so take your time and have a blast. Turning the stamp in different directions creates a beautiful “wallpaper” effect.Since the joint compound dries so slow, if you dont like the placement of what you stamped, simply smooth it over and do it again. Its very forgiving. Complete the wall in 3 x 3 sections for a full wall effect. If you only want a border of your chosen design, simply run a line of masking tape at the top and bottom of your chosen border depth and apply joint compound to only that area. Stamp your border as you choose. Allow the joint compound to dry completely and to cure for 48 hours before finishing with wall color.A very light coat of water based primer will seal the raw joint compound and prepare it for further color. Be careful not to allow the primer or paint to pool inside the design or you will risk loosing some of its detail. To color the design, either paint over it with standard wall paint or simply add wall paint in your favorite color to translucent wall glaze until the desired level of color is achieved. Working in 3′ x 3′ sections, wipe the glaze mixture over the wall, paying close attention to the design, then immediately wipe or blot it off (depending on the look you like) with a dry rag or sponge. Enjoy your designer walls and revel in the fact that you have something totally unique and hand done by you! Job Do’s and Don’t Of Asking For A Raise

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Jay Bauder Feeling overworked and underpaid? If youre starting to feel like you deserve a raise, here are eight DOs and DONTs to build your confidence and tact (and what to avoid!) in asking for the salary you feel you deserve. DO 1. Devise a Plan of Action. First and foremost, get a strategy together. Make a note of the specific projects youve undertaken and the results youve accomplished. List all of your job skills and the features that make you an asset to this company. Find out what a typical raise is for someone with your experience in your area of occupation. Know the facts and be realistic in your request. 2. Ask for an amount thats slightly higher than one you would be happy with. If you would be happy with a 5% raise, ask for one a couple of points above it. That way, if your boss starts to negotiate, you wont feel as if your worth has been diluted any by getting less than what you feel you deserve. 3. Remember, your boss shouldnt be the only one negotiating. If your company is going through a slow period or the economy is down, try to be flexible and know how to respond if your boss suggests a lower amount than what you may have been expecting. Consider other ways of getting a raise too, such as additional vacation time, employee perks or more time off. All of these can be just as good (if not better!) than an actual amount of money. 4. Choose a specific day and time to meet with your supervisor about your raise request. Avoid choosing a Monday or Friday when bosses are at their busiest. Studies have actually shown that people are more receptive on a Tuesday or Wednesday after lunch. That way, theyre not thinking about the weekend or their stomachs while youre getting up the nerve to ask about a raise! If youre afraid of being interrupted during your request, ask to speak to your supervisor for a few minutes after hours. DONT 1. Raise your tone of voice if your boss objects to your raise at first. Remember, he or she is paying you to do a certain job, and youre asking for more money to do the same job. Be professional and polite at all times, and listen more than demand. Chances are, if your supervisor doesnt award you a raise, they might hint at what else could be done to earn it. If they dont, dont be afraid to ask what steps would be necessary to prove yourself. 2. Threaten with quitting if you dont get the raise or telling your boss you have another job offer unless you actually do. He may just call your bluff and let you go! 3. Stumble or beat around the bush with your request. Be straightforward and confident. You are a valuable member of a team and the supervisor hired you because they obviously thought you were the best qualified. If you have Thank You notes from customers or letters from the company praising you for a job well done, bring those to your meeting as well, as theyll help to cement your request and remind your supervisor of your role within the company and its progress. 4. Compare yourself to, or talk negatively about your coworkers or others in a position higher than you. You may think that this will put you in a positive light when it comes to a promotion or a raise, but to your boss, it shows that if you have a poor attitude toward your colleagues, youll keep the same poor attitude if you are promoted. Remember, be confident, professional and tactful. If the boss says no or wants to think about it, open his mind to further consideration by volunteering to do more at the office. Stay an extra hour or help another team on a critical project. This demonstrates that youre willing to tow the mark rather than giving your boss the impression of gimme the money first and THEN Ill work. Good luck! Got Silk? Forget the Dry Cleaners!

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Gabriel J. Adams Silk is one of the most beautiful and luxurious fabrics in the world. Discovered in China around 2700 BC, the production of it was generally unknown to the general public. As a probable result, silk was regarded as pricey a commodity as jade and other spices. So even though your silk shirts may not have been imported from China, we understand your desire to keep these expensive items in top-notch condition. After all, there’s nothing quite like a silk shirt to define a professional look or sophisticated night on the town. Question is - how do you keep silk shirts looking new? First things first - don’t wear silk shirts without some type of protection without sweat. It’s an oxymoron for sure - considering that silk makes a great heat insulator. Protect your precious wardrobe from permanent sweat stains by wearing perspiration pads and/or other protective under-garments. Second, hand wash your silk shirts instead of having them dry-cleaned. Dry-cleaning is often the first recommended method of cleaning silk shirts, however the solutions used in dry-cleaning can actually do more harm than good. These chemicals can emphasize existing stains, inadvertantly create new ones, or even weaken the fibers that hold your silk shirts together. Hand washing silk shirts prevents the damage caused by dry-cleaning because you just don’t use the same chemicals. A 20-minute soak in warm water and mild soap is all you need to remove odors and new stains. Rinse with warm water, lay flat between two towels to dry, and squeeze out excess water. That’s it! You don’t need any fancy dry cleaning machines or expensive chemical procedure to manage your silk attire. When dry, simply keep them folded in a drawer and keep your silk shirts away from hangers. Even hangers can damage silk shirts by leaving horrid hanger marks on them. Fortunatly, you flattening these marks by using an iron with a low-setting. Overcoming Shyness

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Julian Cowie Shyness can be a huge problem for some people especially when it comes to dating and social interaction. Sometimes being shy can be a big plus when it comes to relationships. Some people find shyness cute and are attracted to shy people. The cuteness soon wears off, if for example, you are incapable of doing anything on your own. Simple things like going into a crowded hotel, or arranging tickets to the theatre. This is when you become needy and needy people get to be a pain in the neck. So what can you do about it, before you be come needy that is?. Throughout your life you have to grow. We have to grow as people and learn new things to progress. If you keep your me active you will be a much more interesting person with a sparkling personality. Now if you’re too shy and it stops you from doing things then you must to something about it. To do this will require some effort on your part but then most worthwhile things do. The good thing is you can start right now, there are plenty of opportunities in everyday life to get rid of that being shy habit for good. Before you do any of the things I’m going to suggest take a moment to stop and think about what is the worse thing that could happen to you. You will not be putting yourself at risk in any way, not in any physical danger. You have nothing to loose except your own fearful way of life, which has no doubt stopped you from having fun up until now. So be brave! You have everything to gain. Start with something simple, this is so easy anyone can do it (unless for some reason you have your jaw wired up! ) SMILE, smile to yourself in the mirror when you get up, go on, no-one will see you, do it a few times until its natural. Now that didn’t hurt did it? Now next time you leave the house Smile at everyone you meet or pass in the street. Do this until it becomes second nature, you don’t even have to say anything. Do it so often that people will wonder why you are always smiling. They will start to talk. You know that girl in number 54 always smiling she is, lovely smile to, I wonder what she is smiling about? She must have a happy life So now we are going from being shy to being mysterious and we all know that being mysterious is so attractive and sexy! See how easy it is and you haven’t had to say a word. You will have to say a word of course, only one at this stage, say hi or hello Not difficult just do it.Again do it until it becomes natural. No one is going to be upset if you say Hi to them and if they are then that person is not worth getting to know anyway. So we are just taking it a step at a time no rush no pressure take your time. Now the next step is to stop and say a few words, just talk about the weather will do for now. You see being shy is all about you. The focus is about you and what you feel. What will people think of you. You need to shift the focus off yourself and develop a genuine interest in other people. What about them what do they think, how to they feel, what sort of life do they live, what is their story?. This comes natural to a lot of people but some of us have to practice, fake it till you make it. By shifting the focus away from yourself you will find it a lot easier. Guess what it’s not that hard because people love to talk about themselves and what is happening in their family. When you leave they will say what a lovely person to talk to in fact you may have only said a couple of words. People will love you for being interested and taking the time to see how they are. If you like you can use visualisation, picture yourself talking to people with ease in social situations. Getting people to talk about themselves can be useful if your on a first date, you can sit and listen. Only disclose as much about yourself as you want to. Some things are better left unsaid, left in the passed where they belong. We only come to this earth once as far as I know, this is our one shot at life, sometimes we need to put all our fears aside and go for it, whatever ‘it’ is. So don’t let shyness stop you from doing what you want to. Life is too Short. Julian Cowie is a freelance writer and internet marketer. Kid Crafts: Beading for Beginners Part I

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Marcel Vigh Three or four years ago, I was a bead fanatic. I loved beading and I made bead animals all the time. After I had completed more than hundred bead animals and creatures, I gave it up. I got bored with. A few weeks ago, it came to my mind and I decided to start beading again. After I’ve made some animals, I noticed that I still love beading. It’s just fantastic! So, let’s get started! First, you’ll need:beadswire (or nylon fishing line)pattern By the way, what do you use, wire or nylon fishing line? Formerly, I used fishing line, because I found it easier to use. And it’s easier to use indeed. However, it has no definite shape. The animal won’t stand on its feet. The wired animals will stand. You can bend them as you like. And it’s a great advantage! So, I would suggest the wire, but very thin wire. And what about beads? I’ve been using seed (small) beads for the body of the animals since I started beading. There are also long beads (I don’t know the proper name), use them for wings and sometimes for legs. Seed Beads: These are the basic beads that we use for beading. They usually make up the body of an animal. Nowadays, you can buy them in whatever color, size and shape you want. I use quiet small (I don’t know the exact size) and round seed beads. Bigger Beads: These are much bigger than the seed beads. I usually use them for the eyes of an animal. However, use them whenever you want to highlight something. Long Beads: The size of the long beads is between the seed beads and the ‘bigger beads’. I use them for wings, legs and sometimes for some other parts of the animal’s body. So, in the next part, I’m going to write about the basic beading techniques. To learn more about it click here! What Is Better Than FREE?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By James Burchill Oh come on! FREE is free. Zero, zip, nada, zilch. What on earth could be better than FREE? I recently told you FREE was the most powerful word in advertising. Nothing has changed, it still is. So what is with the headline of this article? What is better than FREE? Well before I explain, lets recap a little first. FREE is the most powerful word in marketing and advertising world because at its very heart lies the secret of risk reversal. If you recall, in the previous article I was encouraging you to make your offer as close to risk-free as possible. And if you do this, you will be ahead of most of your competition. — Beyond Risk Reversal Getting over the risk associated with making the wrong choice, or making the choice and then having the product under deliver or simply not work, is a problem that every buyer struggles with. And for what its worth, most people are more afraid of making the wrong choice and looking foolish, than they are of just making the wrong choice. So if you can negate this fear, if you stack the deck in your favour. If you can get the buyer over that hurdle, they will be one step closer to saying yes. — Lets Dance In any business transaction there is a silent dance that plays out every time someone offers something for sale, and someone considers buying it. Each party silently tries to maneuver themselves into a position where their risk is limited. As the seller, you can help the buyer get to that place if you assume all or more of the risk, then you will have less trouble selling your product or service. Its that simple. — But James, nothing in life is really free. Well, that is true to some extent. Even if I gave you something free, what it really means is that you did not have to part with any money. You paid no cash. You may still have spent time and energy on the sales process; you may have invested yourself emotionally in the prospect of owning that flashy new fangled widget. Therefore, in reality, you have spent something you spent time. And time unlike money is non-refundable. Time is finite and as the old saying goes Time waits for no man. So if your prospect has accepted your request to explore the possibility of buying something from you, and has even gone so far as to consider making a deal with you, what can you do to clinch it? Well you can let them know you value their time. You can show them you respect them for taking the time to meet with you. You can show them that you appreciated their consideration of your product or service. — And The Answer Is And so the answer to your question what is better than free? is Better Than Risk Free or BTRF for short. Simply put, a BTRF offer rewards your customer for favouring you with their buying decision. In addition, if it does not work out you compensate them for their efforts. Here is a concrete example: Whether you sell products or services, give the client something extra as part of the main deal. If the extra premium is free, then so much the better. To make the deal even stronger, make it known that the whole deal is 100% guaranteed and youll refund their money if required (or whatever makes sense) and also let them know that regardless of the deals outcome, (and this is the BTRF part) they get to keep the premium item you gave them as your way of saying thank you. Better Than Risk Free is better than free. Chiropractic Lead Me to Ayurveda

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Helen Thomas Whether you’re interested in preventing serious disease and improving your health in general or you want to treat specific symptoms such as headache, overweight, or insomnia, Ayurveda works. I was practicing Chiropractic when Ayurveda fortunately found me. I have seen people whose lives have changed thanks to Ayurveda. They are joined by thousands of other people all over the world who are living proof that this holistic, integrated health system is as effective as it was when it originated in India nearly six thousand years ago. Today the ancient beauty and wisdom of Ayurveda is spreading to the Western world, thanks in part to the success of the best-selling books and videotapes of Dr. Deepak Chopra, who was one of my teachers. The message of Ayurveda is falling on eager ears for good reason: Although modern mainstream medicine has achieved enormous success in some areas, particularly traumatic injury, acute infections, and certain types of cancers, the track record is not so impressive for treating chronic diseases such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and most types of cancer. Nor is conventional medicine known for its warm, caring, individualized treatment, or its ability to prevent disease in the first place. Complementary, alternative, or unconventional therapies such as Ayurveda have stepped in to fill the gap, so much so that they are being called “the hidden mainstream.” This phenomenon was recently documented in the New England Journal of Medicine when it published a survey that found that one out of three people used at least one unconventional therapy in 1990.That number is even higher in 2007. The revolution has occurred, it just is not being televised. Based on the survey results, the authors estimated that people actually make more visits to unconventional-therapy practitioners than to mainstream primary-care physicians, and are spending approximately the same total amount of money out-of-pocket ($10 billion) for unconventional therapies as for hospitalizations. Ayurveda, a Sanskrit word that means “knowledge of life and longevity,” is based on principles and rhythms found in nature. It makes use of daily and seasonal lifestyle practices (including diet, yoga, and meditation), healing herbs, purification therapies, and a life-affirming mental attitude. Although at first glance some Ayurvedic practices may seem exotic, foreign, or downright old-fashioned, they are in actuality universal, timeless, and as useful now as they were thousands of years ago. In my practice I have found that Ayurveda is more relevant than ever, since it seeks to restore harmony and balance in a world that is growing increasingly out of kilter, with pollution, stress, junk food, accelerating schedules, sedentary occupations, and passive pastimes. When I came to Ayurveda in 1987, I had been a chiropractor for five years. In chiropractic I had a very specific tool, one that realigned the spine and opened up the circulation to enhance the healing wisdom of the body. Although this was helpful for my patients, for many people relief was temporary and they suffered from stubborn, recurring musculoskeletal pain. This troubled me as a professional and I looked for a complementary alternative medicine that supported chiropractic adjustment. I had a personal interest too: Although I had been meditating for many years, and was able to keep up a busy practice while raising a family, I had to admit I was frequently exhausted. When I discovered Ayurveda, I saw that this holistic approach could be the answer. I was easily able to combine chiropractic with Ayurveda, since Ayurveda had a tradition of spinal manipulation as part of a larger, more comprehensive model of health care. As a result I fell in love with the ancient science and enjoy practicing it and getting the great benefits personally and seeing so many people happy and healthy. Copyright Dr.Helen Thomas 2007. I have study with the best in the nation and the best in India. It is a practice that takes a lifetime to become a master. I love teaching it and practicing it. The results in everyday practice are phenomenal. It takes seven years to get a degree in Ayurveda in India. It is a serious healthcare science that as a doctor of Chiropractic I was prepared to take it on as my specialty. Who’s Birthday Is It Anyway?

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Diane Williams Merry Christmas everybody from Mrs. Fox! What is December 25th all about to you America? I will let you answer that question for yourself. But for me and my house, we will acknowledge our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on that day and everyday of the year. I have raised my children to understand that this was not their birthday. I would explain this to them by saying, How would you like it; if on your birthday I gave all your gifts to people that was celebrating your birthday? They would respond by saying Mother that is not right. I would agree and then tell them that everyday is Christmas, but on December 25th we are celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I would also tell them that we are gifts to God by the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. By raising my children to understand the real reason for Christmas I have saved a lot of money over years. Dont get me wrong, I would always say Merry Christmas to them when I brought them their necessities and wants. (smart uh?) America please understand as parents if you fail to inform your own children of the reason for the season while they are growing up; nobody else will. I believe that if adults would just grow up and stop interfering with Christmas, the children of today would have a day of rejoicing and the adults would not have a day of going into debt for things. Now after Christmas, on January 1st I would go into the stores and shop like crazy for my children and everybody else. Why? Because, I know that businesses count on shoppers during the holidays to be materialistic; and I am a wise steward when it comes to economics. In addition, I would give each one of my children a $100.00 and let them loose in the store. Then they would buy whatever they want. However, the joy they had on their faces was proof enough for me to know how the Lord Jesus Christ felt when he gave me the gift of his Salvation to live for him. You see the $100.00 in the hands of my children to buy what they want is just like the salvation the Lord Jesus Christ gave to me so I can now live for Him. America let us get it straight when it comes to Christmas and why we celebrate it okay. Mrs. Fox Speaks!
