Job Interview Issues - How To Dress To Match The Interview

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Mark Baber Recently a job seeker sent me this inquiry below, relating to their problems with how to dress for an interview. Read on and see how sometimes the issues become confusing. “Hello Mark, Couple days ago I went to a job interview with a national restaurant chain. I got the interview through a recruiter, who told me to dress “appropriately” for the job interview. So I wore Dockers, a nice shirt with button down collar and neck tie. And I wore my non-slip shoes, as the interview was to take place at one of their restaurant locations, I figured safety first. I would have wore my dress suit, but when the recruiter said to dress “appropriately,” I took that to mean to dress according to the interview location. So I did. Well, I just heard back from the recruiter and he told me I was out of consideration for the job. One of the reasons he mentioned for me being removed, was my manner of dress, and specifically mentioned my shoes. The interviewer didn’t feel I was dressed correctly for the job interview. I feel as though I was dressed correctly, because we met at a in-operation restaurant location. How is one to know what is appropriate and what is not appropriate job interview dress? Tracy M, Lexington, KY” As you see from the letter above, job interview dress issues can be confusing. When I speak with my own job candidates, my advice about how to dress for any job interview is almost always the same: “Dress as though you are going to meet the President of the Company.” When you enter a job interview, first impressions are lasting. You are not dressing to impress the person or persons with whom you are meeting — though that may also be a benefit of your appearance — instead, you are dressing to exhitbit yourself as a professional in your vocation. Never quibble over this, always dress for success, however cliche it may sound. Now, there are some exceptions, which is why I say above my advice is ‘almost always the same:’ when it comes to what to wear to a job interview. For example, when your interview may include a work environment tour that requires protective clothing or when formal clothing may be vulnerable to destruction, such as a tour of a factory or manufacturing plant, or construction site, or mining facility. But in such cases, don’t assume, ask your interviewer prior to your visit what they consider proper attire. Don’t guess, and if you cannot verify their opinion of what to wear, ‘always dress for success.’ Risking the cost of cleaning or even replacing a dress suit may seem an expensive way to get a job, but if you get the job, it may seem a small price to pay. When it comes to your bridal jewelry, you feel the same way. Selecting the bridal jewelry that will give you the added sparkle and glamour to finish your look off is as important as the selection of the wedding dress. Nothing says bride like beautiful, sparkly bridal jewelry. Whether you love pearls or have to have swarovski crystals, your bridal jewelry should be your spectacular finishing touch. When selecting your bridal jewelry, keep in mind the style of wedding you are having. Lariats and drop necklaces look lovely draped around any bride with an open backed dress or a plunging neckline. Chokers are great for halter wedding gowns, a parallel in design. Stick with that theme, your bridal jewelry will compliment your entire look. In addition to looking great on your wedding day, wearing your bridal jewelry again for more special occasions will remind you of how wonderful your wedding day was. Lap Band Surgery Explained

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Gay Redmile Lap Band surgery (also known as obesity surgery, laparoscopic banding, bariatric surgery, gastric banding) has emerged as a safe and viable option, with over 180,000 of the procedures having been performed worldwide. This surgery, for morbid obesity, as been around for over 50 years - starting with jejunoileal bypass (a malabsorptive procedure) in the 1950s, followed by gastric bypass (malabsorptive-restrictive procedure) in the 1960s, and over the last 10 years gastric banding has been performed using a laparoscopic technique. The Lap Band is a restrictive procedure which is less invasive than normal surgery. During the procedure surgeons implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient’s abdomen. The band is placed around the upper stomach, which takes away the appetite of the person and helps them overcome their struggle with hunger. The procedure is adjustable, reversible and does not involve any cutting of the stomach, stapling or gastric bypass. By creating a smaller gastric pouch the Lap Band limits the amount of food that the stomach can hold at any time. The inflatable ring controls the flow of food from this smaller pouch to the rest of the digestive tract. The person will feel comfortably full with a small amount of food and will continue to feel full for several hours - reducing the urge to eat between meals. As there is no cutting, stapling or stomach re-routing involved in with the Lap Band procedure, it is considered to be the least traumatic of all weight loss surgeries. The surgery also offers the advantages of reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay and quicker recovery. If for any reason the Lap Band needs to be removed - it can be and the stomach usually returns to its original shape. The Lap Band is an adjustable treatment - meaning that adjustments can be made after surgery - to suit individual requirements. The diameter of the band can be adjusted for individual weight-loss rates - as needs change. Should an individual become pregnant they could expand their band to accommodate a growing fetus, just as other individuals who are experiencing slow weight loss can have their bands tightened. This can be undertaken as an outpatient procedure by injection or withdrawal of saline. Prior to undertaking Lap Band Surgery they would be a preoperative screening consisting of complete blood tests, imaging studies, a gastroscopy and consultations with various specialists. The cost of Lap Band Surgery varies - depending on which state you live in - varying between $17,000$30,000. Gay Redmile is the webmaster of numerous health and well being sites. Soil and Your Garden

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Robert Gettle Let’s GardenSoil and Your Garden An important first step to understanding why things grow well in your garden or why they don’t, is knowing the composition of your soil. Soil is composed of mineral substances or particles formed from the breakdown of rocks, decaying organic matter, microorganisms, water, and air. All these components are interrelated and makes soil a fertile environment for growing, with life and activity within it. All soil was not created equal. Good soil is crumbles when you rub it in your hands; its grainy and pliable as you work it in the ground. It is a rich dark brown color and smells like clean earth. Soil gets its texture from sand and silt and clay particles. Soil needs air and drainage so water doesn’t clog or wash away the particles. Soil can be broken down into three groups sand, loan, and clay. To be ideal your soil will be a mixture of all three, but sometimes you will need to ammend the soil by adding organic matter to improve it’s texture. A clay soil appears just like its name, clay is heavy to the touch when you dig in it and dence in appearance. When it rains clay soil is slow to dry out and because of its denseness it can’t absorb light and heat quickly from the sun. When a soil forms craters and ruts it is most likely to be clay soil. Clay soil can form a hard crust when left alone it can be very difficult to penetrate. The exact opposite of clay soil is sandy soil. Sandy soil is composed of visible particles and easy to dig in.. Rain and sunlight penetrate through sandy soil easily because of his light granular texture. When you take the best parts of both clay and sandy soils and you add organic matter you get loamy soil.Organic matter improves the structure and texture of soil. Organic matter allows soil to absorb the sun and retain water and this stimulates plant growth. You need to have your soil tested to find out if it is acid or alkaline. The pH level of your soil can be determined by a soil test. A neutral pH is 7.0. Soil that is slightly higher acid in the pH level of 6.5 is good for both vegetables and flower gardening. The tests will also tell you the composition of your soil how much magnesium, phosphate, and potash to soil the test also contains an analysis of the texture of the soil-Sandy, loamy,or clay along with recommendations to enhance it. Usually these tests are done at a very reasonable cost. Check with your local county extension agency. It’s better not to submit lawn and garden soil samples together. You should get separate soil test and label them accordingly such as lawn, vegetable garden, or flower garden. To get a sample of your soil in the garden dig down about 6 inches with the garden spade or shovel. To take a sample from an established lawn dig down about 2 inches. Take several samples of soil from your garden and lawn so you get an overall analysis of your entire soil. You can test your soil yourself, just take a clear quart size or larger jar with a lid. Fill the jar half way with soil from your garden now build the jar with water. Put the lid on tight and shake it well mixing the soil with the water, and let it set overnight. Next day you should have four layers in the jar sand on the bottom, silt next, then clay and organic matter on the top the organic matter may be either floating or settled into the clay layer. An optimum soil is at least 20% organic matter. You can add peat moss or compost to loosen clay soils or to add more body to a sandy soil .You can then retest the new soil mixture to see if you have at least 20% organic matter. Human Resources Interview: Mistakes To Avoid

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Carl Mueller The Human Resources interview is often the first step in the job interview process. Its also one of the steps that job searchers tend to look at as being unimportant. Job searchers who treat the HR interview as being unimportant risk losing out on jobs. Ive lost count of how many times Ive been helping a job candidate prepare for a job interview and have had to convince them that the Human Resources interview that they are preparing for is one that they actually need to take seriously. Many people seem to think that they are smarter than the HR person they are going to interview with and think that they can confuse them with technical jargon and bluff their way past HR to get to the hiring manager. If you are not making it past the HR interview stage for various jobs you are applying for, you need to understand the differences between interviewing with an HR interviewer and the hiring manager. HR is brought into the interview process to represent the company and to determine whether or not you are a fit for the organization. Here are some things you should consider when preparing for a Human Resources interview.1. Human Resources can prevent you from getting hired. Ive seen cases where the HR representative prevents the hiring manager from hiring someone who the hiring manager wanted. HR can have significant input into the hiring process in some companies and in some cases can be the final say as to whether or not you get hired regardless of whether you interview with them first or last and regardless of how badly the hiring manager wants you. 2. The Human Resources interview will assess your suitability to join the company. Before a company invests potentially tens of thousands of dollars (or more) by hiring you, they are going to ensure you will fit within the organization. If you cant answer questions about yourself, why you want to join the company and other HR-type questions why would they hire you? The questions may seem trivial to you but they arent to the HR person interviewing you, trust me. 3. Understand how Human Resources can help you get the job. Ive seen some HR reps who tell me on the phone that they particularly like one candidate over another and basically tell me that they are going to try to steer the hiring manager towards that candidate and away from the one they dont like as much. They arent necessarily playing favorites, theyve simply decided that one candidate suits the company better than another. HR can be your advocate if you take them seriously. 4. People hire people who they like. All things being equal, a company will someone they like over someone who they dont like as much. When two candidates are equal in all areas, a company will hire the person that they feel will be a better fit in their organization. Its really that simple. Performing well during the Human Resources interview can only help your chances at getting the job. 5. Dont assume the HR rep doesnt know what you know. Unless you know the Human Resources person interviewing you or unless youve seen a copy of their resume, how you can tell what they know and what they dont know? Dont assume that they wont understand your business or profession or that youll confuse them by using technical jargon. For all you know, they may have done your job in the past and be very familiar with your job. They may interview people with your skills regularly so believing that you can confuse them by mentioning technical terms and phrases might end up costing you when they see right through it. Samsung X820 - Slim and Slender

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ana_Eileen]Ana Eileen Samsung X820 might have lost the coveted title of world’s slimmest phone to one of its brother called Samsung ultra edition 5.9, yet it hasn’t lost its appeal with the users. It has been quite some time (almost an year) since we saw this handset in the market, Samsung X820 still woos its users the way it used to before. It can be said that the biggest reason as to why this mobile phone is popular is due to its ultra slim looks. Seemingly, Samsung has not compromised with its features and it has contrived to build a highly advanced piece of mobile telephony that is not only blessed with superior looks but with brilliant features as well. The handset works on Tri-Band GSM network that gives you brilliant connectivity with its added features as GPRS and EDGE. The standard web browsing and e-mailing features have been included in this handset. Further a 2 Mega Pixels camera also makes sure that you can click the most amazing photographs through it. As far as the memory is concerned, Samsung X820 has a sufficient internal memory at 80 MB, however you might feel a dearth of an external memory card in this device. Further, the entertainment features have been fully taken care of in this handset as it is equipped with a MP3 music player that will keep you entertained at your will. Also you can turn this handset into your perfect business companion as it is capable of giving you access to all of your corporate data through its document viewer. Also it has a TV out feature in it that can make you view all of your camera images through this handset. Thus Samsung X820 is an all inclusive handset that makes possible for you to carry out a lot of functions through it. Research Tips & Tricks - For Graduate Students

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Kristie Lorette Ok, so when you signed up for graduate school you knew that you had to complete a research project or dissertation, but where are you supposed to start? For many graduate students the act of having to conduct research in a graduate setting is beyond them. It really is a skill that must be acquired for a graduate student to successfully complete his or her degree. What exactly are you supposed to do on a daily basis to come out with a finished project? Following you will find some helpful tips on how graduate students can tackle their research efforts. So are you ready? Here we go… Research is made up of many different parts. It’s not just about going to the library and checking out some books and it’s not just about sitting at your computer and “Googling” something. Research for graduate school is about finding a topic or idea and then implementing it. Graduate students spend the majority of their time formulating these brilliant ideas by talking about them with their classmates and professors, reading other research papers and published articles, and writing and revising papers. 1. Journal. Graduate students find it helpful to journal or keep track of their ideas, thoughts, and research activities. Keep track of everything that you do or think about so that you can reference it later when you need it. You will start to notice that some of your of random thoughts and ideas actually start to form a pattern. This pattern often becomes a research project or your thesis topic for a paper. 2. Stay current. In our ever changing world things are always evolving. This is true with almost any industry that you may be interested in pursuing or any field that you may be studying. During the course of research it is important that you are as up-to-date and current as possible. As a graduate student you can accomplish this by reading trade journals and technical papers written by your colleagues. Talk with your advisor or fellow students to find out which journals are most useful. 3. Be choosy. Your advisor will or can provide you with a list of “must reads” when it comes to technical papers, journals, articles, etc. These are the resources that you should read and evaluate completely during your research. If you come across a paper that you are not sure about, read the abstract first to see if it is something that is of interest to you and your research. A good researcher is able to deduce whether or not something is related to his or topic and then is to apply the pertinent information in their overall research project. Tips for Evaluating Papers a. Understand what motivated the writer/researcher to pose the problem presented in their paper. b. Understand how the researcher went about finding the solution to the problem and why he/she took the steps that they did to get to the solution. c. Make sure the idea or topic of the paper really worked as opposed to being just a theory. d. Understand what the actual accomplishment was when the research was completed. e. Does the research allow for any future direction? 4. Keep everything. Keep files with all of the papers that you read and use during your research. You may need to access them later and you will want to be able to put your hands on them quickly. Also, be sure to notate on each paper the source from which you obtained it. 5. Stay Motivated. Sometimes when you become so engrossed in something you feel bogged down and maybe even bored, tired, and depressed. It is essential that you stay motivated and on track so that you can reach your goal. One way to stay focused and motivated is to organize your time and research activities by making daily, weekly, and monthly schedules. By doing this you are also setting daily weekly and monthly goals. Setting short-term and long-term goals also helps you to break big projects down into smaller segments. This tactic helps you to keep from becoming overwhelmed. It’s much easier to have to complete one chapter today than it is to have to complete an entire research project in one day. You can’t just schedule work, work, work and no play, play, play. Schedule times when you can participate in leisure activities that you enjoy. Whether you love skiing or going to the movies, this will provide you with some downtime that you need to clear your head and return to your work refreshed. 6. Get a “study buddy.” Having to bear the burden with someone else is always easier than having to go it alone. Try to find a research buddy that you can schedule time so that you can complete your research tasks together. If your research is related then you may even be able to divvy up some up the work, allowing you to cover more ground in less time. Even if you are doing totally different research at least you can head to the library or head to the lab together instead of having to do it all alone. So while research can see overwhelming at times, there are ways that you can manage your research. These tips and tricks will help to keep you motivated and on the right path. Avoid the research blues, keep your head up, and keep moving forward. Kristie Lorette is a frequent contributor to CareersandEducation.com. Why Collecting Baseball Cards is Cool for Kids

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Stacie Mahoe Yes, Im here to tell you that collecting baseball cards is a great way for parents to spend quality time with their kids. The hobby of collecting baseball cards is enjoyed by people of all ages including kids. If youre kids love the sport of baseball, collecting cards with them is a great activity you can do together! Building the Collection No matter what activity youre talking about, if kids are involved the number one priority is fun! Kids continue to be involved with activities they enjoy. If its not fun, chances are, they wont stick with it long. Therefore, when venturing in on collecting baseball cards with your kids, dont forget to keep it fun! Let the kids decide what cards they want to collect. Do they want rookie cards? Do they like a certain team? Do they love to watch certain players? Find out what they like and have them concentrate on collecting cards that fall in line with their personal interests. Its fun for them and, no matter what the monetary value; they will always treasure their baseball cards if its made up of their favorite teams and players. Learning Responsibility and Value In addition to some of the benefits mentioned above, collecting baseball cards can also help teach your children responsibility. As you probably know, baseball cards in good condition hold more value than cards that are bent or damaged in some other way. Give your children the responsibility of making sure that all cards are handled and stored properly to keep them in the best possible condition. Have your children be responsible for, not only storing the cards properly, but for organizing them as well. A well organized collection is often more valuable than one that is not organized. Collecting and taking care of baseball cards can also teach your children about collecting and properly caring for things that will increase in value over time. Getting Started Like anything else, its best to learn as much as you can about an activity when first starting out. To learn more about collecting baseball cards, you can find free tips online or subscribe to a monthly sports hobby publication. But, again, the most important thing is to keep this hobby fun. Start slow and collect what you and your family enjoy. Its the best way to ensure that your family enjoys this hobby together for years to come. What Makes a Good Performance Appraisal?

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Robin Chandler There are increasingly two schools of thought (we’re sure there are probably 2002): one for and one against Appraisals. And in both, the bottom line still is that they will cost your company money if not handled well. As we know, in vast numbers of cases they aren’t. Although the appraisal format may be key, the best procedures in the world won’t really be effective if the person running the appraisal isn’t handling it efficiently, professionally and with long-term care involved. Performance appraisals are almost always a one or two-times a year process rather than something that is a daily part of a manager’s job. They usually become ‘tick the box’ exercises that cause a great deal of anxiety on both ’sides’ and once they’re competed they aren’t looked at again till the next time. Difficult feedback gets postponed or sugar-coated, or even worse, lied about on the Appraisal form. A lot of managers don’t want to put down in black and white that someone’s performance has been under par and therefore they (the manager) will be responsible for that person not getting a pay increase or promotion. In turn, appraisals can also lack objectivity and, therefore, have more personal rather than professional views included which could be detrimental. In addition, if everything is focused on the appraisal process then you run the risk of creating anxiety during the build-up and a lack of motivation and productivity as people anticipate the results. In other words, there should be no surprises during an appraisal. Supposedly only 5% of organisations say they have satisfactory appraisal processes, but we got that information off the Internet, so Id take it with a pinch of salt! A truly good Appraisal is actually an agreed summary of what has been happening on an on-going basis between appraisals. If it is left to review twice a year, or quarterly, all the opportunities to support and guide the employee to improve get missed. People need to be engaged in the idea that managing people - and being managed - is constant. Fear, uncertainty, collusion, duplicity, embarrassment, laziness, guilt and sheer incompetence are among the reasons why appraisals are often not worth the paper they are written on. One of our clients told us that rather than completely redoing their appraisal process they decided to ‘mark down’ their performance related pay levels: in other words if someone had been scored a 4 (out of 5 levels) they were lowered to a 3. This was because they discovered that most managers scored people higher than their performance merited. It was an exercise in trying to get rid of the ‘invisible incompetence’ that the process colluded in. A great appraisal needs to be fair, objective, two-way, realistic, clear, on-going and specific. It also needs to be positioned well. It’s easy to shoot yourself in the foot if you place too much emphasis on the actual appraisal process and not on the on-going performance management. People will focus on the process rather than the objective, which is to help people develop in to more effective, better managed members of staff. Makeup Artist’s Secrets: Face Shape Makeup Tips

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Lynn Starner We all dont have the perfect facial structure. Thats why we need face shape makeup tips. These tips will help each of us apply makeup to bring out our best features and minimize the ones that we dont like so much. So, whatever your question is about your facial shape or facial features, weve got a makeup tip to help you. The Tools First, its important to realize what tools youll be using. Well make use of color correcting correctors. Light color correctors can dramatically change your appearance. For instance, mauve or light pink corrector can brighten and conceal dull skin tones. Pale green is used to correct ruddiness. Light yellow corrects under eye circles and other purplish/blue discolorations. These light colors can help improve facial features by lengthening, filling out and brightening skin. Dark colors will reduce, deepen, darken and conceal features and discolorations. Using a mixture of light and dark correctors (foundations) you can create almost any illusion you like. The key is to blend, blend, blend. If you are using any corrector, whether its a color or a foundation that is darker or lighter than what you usually wear, always remember to apply with a light hand and blend well. The light foundation corrector should be only 1 or 2 shades lighter and the dark foundation corrector should be no more than 2 shades darker than your usual color. Face Shape Makeup Tips Find your face shape makeup tips below. Oval: This is the ideal facial shape. With the use of dark and light correctors every facial shape can be made to resemble an oval facial shape. Oval faces can need darker foundation applied at the forehead and chin to make it less severely oval. Trapezoidal: This facial shape requires refining the lower part of the face with a darker corrector while also using a light corrector at the temple. This will bring the face in, making it more narrow and longer. Rectangular or Square: Correct both of these shapes with darker foundation at the four corners. This redefines the corners into more of a curve, giving it a whole new dimension. Triangular: The triangular face needs darker foundation at the chin, making it appear shorter, and at the temples, bringing the focus towards the middle of the face. Using light foundation along the jawline will give it more balance and depth. Round: Round faces need only a little darker foundation applied at the temples and around the lower face. This will make it appear a little more elongated. Balancing Your Features Face shape makeup tips also include your facial features. If youve got a feature youre not too fond of, like your nose or chin, playing with light and dark correctors can help you adjust how they look. Well give you the makeup artists tips on how to do this. Prominent Chin: Correct this by applying a little darker foundation right on the tip of your chin, and blend well. Double Chin: If you have a double chin, blend a darker foundation right on the double chin. Long Nose: Think your nose is too long? Apply dark foundation right on the tip and blend well to make it appear shorter. Broad Nose: Broad noses are easily adjusted with dark foundation applied down each side of the nose. Short Nose: Short noses need a light application of light foundation along the whole top of the nose. This will give it a less defined edge and help it to appear less short. Narrow Nose: Widen a narrow nose by applying a light foundation down each side of the nose. Crooked Nose: A crooked nose is the hardest.
