By Lill Hawkins Sweet, juicy, ripe strawberries! What could be better than picking one right from your own garden and eating it out of hand. Or you might want to gather a bowlful, slice them and serve them over homemade shortcake biscuits or cake. If you grow enough, you can even make jam and preserve it or freeze it. Someone said once that strawberry preserves are like “summer in a jar.” But here in New England, whether you live in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massacusetts, Rhode Island or Connecticut, growing strawberries can be a challenge. Spring warmth often turns to snow squalls or long damp, cold days. Winter is snowy and cold and frost travels deep into the ground, heaving it up in the spring. Summers can be hot and dry or cool and rainy, depending on the year, or a combination of both for long periods. It’s essential that you choose a type of strawberry that grows well in the Northeast. Some types that do well here are Earliglow, Redchief and Allstar, but my favorite is Cavendish, which does very well in Maine where I live. It produces large sweet fruit and is tolerant of uneven growing conditions and weather. I’ve had very good luck with it for several years and would recommend it if your garden soil is heavy and/or clay-like. Your local Extension Office can advise you on what types grow best in your area and also give you growing tips for your particular situation. They’re also able to help with pest problems, soil analysis and diseases of strawberries. You’d be well advised to use their services which are usually free. Except for the day neutral types, which we won’t get into here, strawberries do best in hills in a bed that is wide enough so that their runners can be covered with soil, thereby producing new plants. For the first year, it’s wise to pinch off the flowerbuds, so that they’ll produce more and bigger berries the second year. When runners appear, bury them and they’ll produce new plants. Weeding your strawberry bed is very important, because weeds will choke the plants and reduce the yield. Mulching is a good idea also, to keep down weeds and reduce damage from moisture and dirt. Clean straw can be used and is, in fact, how strawberries got their name. Growers used straw to mulch them. In the fall, you should always mulch the beds to protect the plants from winter damage. Remove all the leaves and cover the crowns with a thin layer of mulch. You can add fertilizer, organic is best, at this time. In the spring, remove the mulch from the top of the crowns and water regularly. Soon, you’ll have another crop of sweet, juicy strawberries from your own garden. Strawberry beds will usually produce a decent crop for up to 5 years. After that, replanting is necessary. You might want to grow two varieties and experiment with a third, to see which does best where you live. That way, you could also plant one variety that produces a spring crop, one that produces in June and one that bears sporadically all season. Once you’ve grown your own strawberries, you’ll never want to be without some in the freezer or fridge or in jam on a shelf in your pantry. They do take a little time to sew but once the garment is finished are well worth the effort. Once you learn the ins and outs of ruffles, then you can add then to a garment you are making without the ruffle being included in the original pattern. You just need to learn how to make the ruffles. Ruffles, when produced by hand, can take some time, but worth the effort. But…if you have a sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch, a ruffler attachment and a narrow hemmer, like a rolled hem attachment, then you can have a lot of fun making ruffles without much effort on your part. The wider the ruffle, the fuller they need to be. The rule of thumb is sheer fabrics need three times the finished ruffle and weightier fabrics only need two and a half times the finished length . Once you have decided on your width and fullness of the ruffles, measure out on your fabric and start cutting out the fabric, remember to allow for hems. I like to make a template from light cardboard, like manila folder thickness, of the finished width of the ruffle, use as a guideto cut the fabric, allow for the hems. Then you can use the same template for pressing up the hems to sew. alternatively make two templates, one with hems added for the measuring and cutting and the other without hems for the pressing. This saves a lot of tedious measuring. Join sections together, end to end, that’s the width and make one continuous length Stitch a narrow double folded hem along one long edge. If your ruffle is going to be on the outside, then you need to stitch both long edges with the narrow double-folded hems. If you have a ruffler attachment for your sewing machine, then attach it and do a test ruffle so you can get the right fullness, follow the instructions for your ruffler attachment. If you don’t have a ruffler attachment, then you can make the ruffles this way. You need the zig-zag stitch for your machine, set to a very wide width and length. This will need a little practice too before you take on the ruffle. You will need a strong cord, something like dental floss is good or a crochet thread. Lay this along the stitching line and being very careful not to catch the floss or thread, zig-zag over it. When you have stitched the length of the ruffle, secure one end of the floss or thread by tying a large knot in it so it won’t pull through. Now pull the other end of the floss or thread until you have the desired length of the ruffle and secure at that end. Divide the finished length of your ruffle into 4 equal measures. If thefinished length will be say 36 inches, then mark out on your template 9 inches. Use this as a guide for getting the gathering even. Start by gathering up the ruffle in sections to the 9 inches and pin each section as you go, then machine stitch the ruffle, cord side up and keep gathers even on both sides of the pressure foot. If you don’t have a machine, then run a basting stitch along the ruffle sections and gather up using the same method as above to get them evenly gathered. The church needs to repent in ashes and humility before the Lord. All these sweet prophecies from dreams and visions the LORD speaks about. The last days church, God is going to raise up the five fold ministry and many churches are going to start small with unqualified and untrained shepherds and apostles save training by the Holy Spirit and massive signs and wonders are going to be wrought in these churches. The churches will be wild and grow fast and they will link up, but will mainly be outside of the mainline denominations. Sightings of Jesus will be reported among them and the healings and signs and wonders and the un-conformity among these churches and apostles and prophets will see the new movement branded as a cult. In the parable where Jesus said the rich man invited all his rich friends to a banquet, the rich friends all made excuses and did not come. In fact in one reading of the parable they even beat and killed the servants that were sent to announce the banquet. The prophets are already waring the church of Christs imminent judgement and calling them to repent and be holy and set apart and start to store their treasure in heaven and not on earth. By in large these small prophets such as me are being told to shut up and not to prophesy doom. Then the master of the feast sends out the invitation to the people on the hi-ways and the by-ways. In the West this is the homeless, the heroin addicts, the drunks, the prostitutes and the homosexuals and every other sort of the person the middle class church does not welcome in their ranks. This new church will create a massive movement and send out the open invitation to the hi-ways and by-ways people. The poor, the downtrodden, the addicted and the hopeless and they will stitch them up and heal them and teach them to prosper. And these people will tithe and give a lot of their money to the church and the signs and wonders will be powerful in this church. The true sheep, the people in other churches who dont mind mixing with the downtrodden will also come to the light and begin to worship and sell houses and sell shares and lay up their riches to this new movement that has powerful evangelists working full time in each suburb. Now the new church is going to be mainly made up with prodigal sons and when the Father welcomes them to the feast there is going to spring up jealously among the traditional church, or the older brother in the prodigal son parable. The older brothers are going to be invited into the feast and the new church, but most of them will be too angry and rather call the new churches cults and its leaders false prophets. The people who have been believers for twenty and thirty years will be very indignant that new believers in this church will be given a church to pastor within six months of being saved and this new church will be growing at a massive rate, because the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit will be found in it and the common man will be flocking to their services and outreaches to be healed. The people who are saved for years in the traditional churches will want the anointing of this new church and will complain to the Father in heaven at the injustice of it all saying that they have worked for 12 hours and through the heat of the day and yet these workers of the last hour are getting paid the same as them. And as the new church explodes and grows the shepherds in the old traditional churches will begin to lose their flock and their income will be plundered and the revival will pass them by.
