On Women Leaving The Canadian Labour Market

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

By Tony Abbis Last week I blogged about a StatsCanada report that noted that the participation rate of women in the workforce was declining, which is a sudden reversal of a decades long trend. This trend was sharpest in Alberta and StatsCanada opined that the availability of day care spaces for children may have been a contributing factor. The Montreal Gazette is carrying an article today that reports that Quebec women are actually increasing labour force participation rates and provides a couple of possible explanations as to why women in other provinces are choosing to leave the workforce. while the percentage of working-age Canadian women in the job market their participation rate began to fall only last year, it has been dropping in the U.S. since the late 1990s. Some American observers attribute the phenomenon to a new wave of social conservatism. Its unclear if this might be a factor in Alberta. This is an important finding, says Prem Benimadhu, a vice-president at the Conference Board of Canada. Benimadhu believes that demands on employees have become toxic in recent years. He thinks that some married women, particularly those waiting to start a family, are starting to find personal interests more attractive than extra income. The increase in participation rates of women was seen as one partial solution to labour shortages caused by the retirement of the baby-boomers, so expect to read more speculation about this over the coming months. An upswing in social conservatism, toxic workplaces and day-care issues may all be contributing to the trend of declining participation rates in the labour force among women - but if we really want to know why women are leaving the workforce maybe we should just ask them. Top Ten Outdoor Gardening Tips for Fall

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Stephanie Gottschalk Your garden should be a relaxing, enjoyable place to be in every season. Keeping your outdoor space inviting is easy with these tips for yards and water gardens in the fall. 1. Keep the water in your outdoor fountain or garden pond free of fallen leaves. Not only can leaves and other fallen organic matter decompose in your pond and cause problems with bacteria and algae, they can also clog your pump. Skim leaves off the surface daily and be sure to use an algaecide made for fountain such as No More Algae for Fountains (found at SpecialtyLiving.com). 2. Clean your fountain pump before emptying the water for the winter. This will ensure that any debris inside the pump wont be left to dry up and clog the inner workings once youve emptied the water from your fountain. Remove the cover and pull out anything that may have accumulated inside. 3. Protect your fountain from cracks due to the expansion and contraction of water as it freezes and thaws. Purchase a fountain cover in the appropriate size and cover the fountain from the top to the bottom of the basin (pedestals dont need to be covered). This will keep precipitation from falling into the basins and causing damage. 4. Prepare your water garden for the upcoming freeze by sinking all hardy perennial aquatics to the deepest area of the pond. This will keep them in the warmest water available and allow them to go dormant for the winter without sustaining damage. 5. If your pond is too shallow to sink your plants over the winter, consider purchasing a de-icer. De-icers heat a small opening in the top of your pond where it would normally freeze over, allowing the release of toxic gases from decomposing organic matter to escape and also oxygenating the water. 6. If you supplement your landscaping or water garden with tropical plants, its best to remove them for the winter unless you live in a mild climate. They wont survive the cold weather, and as they decay they can cause damage to other plants around them. Its recommended to treat them as annuals and purchase new ones each spring. 7. Dont cut your perennials down over the winter leave them standing so they can provide resources for birds. Many plants have attractive foliage and seed pods that offer both food and shelter during the snowy months when both can be difficult for birds to find. Birds need water, also use a plastic container and replace the water frequently. 8. Mulch around perennials and well-established plants to maintain a uniform soil temperature and add a few extra weeks to the root development of newly planted shrubs and trees. 9. Give your garden a good fall cleanup to prevent disease and insect problems next year. Canker, mildew, fungi and other problem spots in your yard can spread to other plant life if the rotting plant matter is allowed to linger and be spread around by wind and water. Prune dead branches, gather fallen leaves and collect yard waste piles and either burn, bury or compost. 10. Plant spring bulbs in October. Planting tulip, crocus, daffodils and other flower bulbs at this time will give the roots time to get established before warm weather rolls back around. Prepare the soil to ensure that it has good drainage. Soil fertility is also important work a complete commercial fertilizer into the upper 4 to 6 inches of soil. The depth of the soil above the bulb should be approximately twice the diameter of the bulb. 100% Home Equity Loan

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christian_Louis]Christian Louis Planning to buy a new car? Thinking of extending your home? Dont have enough money to pursue higher studies in a reputed institution? There is no need to worry at all. You can easily get a 100% Home Equity Loan to achieve your dreams. The functioning of 100% Home Equity Loan is similar to that of the credit card. One can use the loan continuously up to the credit limit. The main advantages of 100% Home Equity Loan is that the interest is lower than that of the credit card and the interest paid is tax deductible. All you need is to talk with your tax planner or financial advisor to know about the tax deductions. As the name states, with 100% Home Equity Loan, you can borrow up to 100% of your homes value at fixed rate of interest. For the reason that you receive the money you borrow in a lump sum, it will be an ideal option to achieve long term financial goals. Generally, the period of repayment of 100% Home Equity Loans is much shorter than ordinary mortgages. Ways to Use 100% Home Equity Loan Take cash only for genuine and specific reasons. Save your tax payments through Home Equity loans whose interest may be fully tax deductible. Home Equity can be used as the part of down payments to get better terms of home purchase or loan refinancing. Through home equity, you can obtain “instant cash” which can be used for other investments or other emergencies as they come up. How to Get a 100% Home Equity Loan If you need instant money and you have your home as equity, it is very easy to get the loan since real estate is the collateral most lenders seek after. The way of attaining a home equity loan can be illustrated using an example. Consider that your home worth $1000 and you owe $400 as mortgage. So, you now have a home equity of $600. With this, you wont get a loan amounting $600 since if he pays you that amount, you will be 100% financed and if you fail to repay the loan the loss is only for the lender. Hence in most cases lenders need you to hold an equity level above the first mortgage and home equity loan combined. What to look before taking 100% Home Equity Loan: Obtain as many offers as many as you get and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each and choose the best among them. Go for fixed rate loans so that the interest will neither rise nor fall like adjustable rate loans. If going for an adjustable rate loan, make sure that the maximum and minimum interest rates are specified. Make sure that you can afford to pay the monthly interest and amortization. Make the contracts reviewed by professionals. How I Improved My Marriage Ten-Fold In One Evening

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

By Beth Young It seems unlikely that anyone could improve his or her marriage in one evening. Well read on! Any positive step in the right direction is an improvement that will continue as long as the efforts continue to be made. As our recent MarriageAdvice.com poll showed, more than 40% of our 207 respondents identified that the single biggest frustration in their marriage was that their husbands “Didn’t Communicate Enough”. Below is a 8-step process to insure that both partners are communicating well. Step #1 - Decide To Communicate There are really only two options when it comes to communicating…either you do it or your don’t. It’s better to try and communicate and fumble around a bit than ignore the problem until it explodes like a pent up volcano. The wise spouse will work to resolve and discuss their feelings before the lava of scalding words overflows. Part of deciding to communicate will include setting aside a time each week to discuss family needs and concerns. This would also be a good time to resolve any minor conflicts that have arisen during the week but weren’t fully taken care of previously. Step #2 - Choose A Good Time If a more heated conflict occurs, it’s important to find the right time to discuss the matter. Waiting for your scheduled night for communicating would not be the best idea; however, taking a little time to give both partners time to cool off is important as well. Working to resolve a big conflict should wait until a time when both parties are not wrung out, angry, tire, or hungry. Your physical state directly impacts your mental state and your ability to work through problems in a rational manner. Additionally, as we allow ourselves time to calm down, we are better able to carefully think about what is really bothering us besides this specific event. In many cases, the topic of the current disagreement may not be the real problem. As we take time to ponder and look for the root of the problem, we are better able to expand our vision to the whole picture and not just have tunnel vision of the current problem at hand. Keep in mind, it may just be we’ve had a bad day and this problem was the last straw. It’s much easier to resolve a problem when we have a better perspective of what is really going on inside of our head and heart. Step #3 - Neutralize Defenses Before you have a deep discussion on something that is bothering you, consider two things. First, your spouse will be more receptive to the discussion if you reinforce your love, and express appreciation and confidence in their many attributes. Second, you choose if you will be irritated or angry, so you need to express yourself in a away that acknowledges your responsibility for your feelings. “You make me so mad!” Really is a false statement because you have allowed yourself to become mad. However,if you said, “When you make fun of me in front of our friends, it embarrasses me and I feel angry and frustrated,” you would be giving a very accurate statement about what has happened to you. Invite your spouse to help you solve this problem you are having, then they become part of the solution, not the problem. Step #4 - Use Humor Like they say, “laughter is the best medicine”. It’s true, physiologically, it relieves stress, and mentally it gives you a time out to relax. You will find that the longer you have been married, the more you have to laugh about. Many things that were painful or frustrating at the time can be viewed with great humor years later. Creating code words from some of these humorous events will help relieve tensions when a similar event threatens to evolve. When either my husband or I say something that is insensitive to the work effort done by the other, all we have to say is “I hate kidney beans”, and the other one immediately realizes their actions are bordering on being insensitive. It’s an easy way to control tense situations, prevent them from escalating and elicit a sincere, “I’m Sorry.” A word of caution, be sensitive to the situation. There are times when humor is neither appropriate or too late in coming and will be viewed as sarcasm. Sarcasm has no place in true efforts to communicate. Step #5 - Be Fair Be careful when discussing sensitive issues and don’t fall into touchy subjects that you know will enflame the argument. Looking for fair solutions may require compromising or acquiescing. Remember, you both need to give, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, to resolve conflicts. Step #6 - Finding a Peaceful Stalemate There are times when you need to just agree to disagree. You don’t always have to agree 100% with your spouse, so there are occasions when a peaceful stalemate would be appropriate. It is only a legitimate solution as long as it isn’t just putting off the blow up for another time. A peaceful stalemate results in open discussion about your differences, why neither of you feel you can change at this time, and acceptance of each others differences. Step #7 - Willingness to Change When we truly feel loved, it gives us the freedom to risk changing and growing into a new and improved version of our old self. As we nurture our marriage relationship, the love and acceptance we feel will be liberating as we make minor and sometimes major changes in whom we are. Marriage is a wonderful opportunity to practice charity towards our spouse and provide a safe relationship where growth can occur. Step #8 - Bolster Each Other No matter what solution you have arrived at, it’s important to always express love and confidence in each other after a disagreement. As we show this love in days to come, it will be clear that no one is harboring ill feelings about the disagreement and that it was truly resolved. When both partners feel loved and supported in their relationship after a disagreement, it’s easier to resolve future problems with love and respect. By applying these communication steps, you have now discovered how you can change your marriage in one evening. It will take practice, but with time, you will discover that your marriage has improved more than ten-fold. Belonging to a Rubber Stamp Club

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Rebecka Whitlock Often, when people hear the words rubber stamp club, they cant figure out what kind of club this would be. Is it a club where people create rubber stamps? Is it a club where people trade rubber stamps? Actually, it is a club where these things happen and more. A rubber stamp club is, obviously, all about rubber stamping, and believe it nor not, there can be quite a bit to this hobby. Many people know about using rubber stamps for various things such as marking childrens school papers, adding cute effects to letters, or stamping dates on things, but these days they can be used for much more. People use rubber stamps for creative crafts, and many times the designs on these rubber stamps can be quite elaborate. When you belong to a rubber stamp club, you have the benefit of being able to share what you know about this hobby with others, and they can share what they know with you. For craft purposes, different types of inks can be used, or hobbyists can use paint on their pads or even markers where they apply to ink directly to the stamp, instead of pressing the stamp on an ink pad. Rubber stamps can have a metal base, or a wood base. Most hobbyists prefer the wood base. The designs for rubber stamps are endless. Hobbyists can get such designs as those for the different holidays, animal designs, floral designs, etc. Rubber stamps can be personalized, or more serious rubber stamp enthusiasts can even design their own. Many craft stores carry a myriad of rubber stamps and rubber stamp designs, and there are also many Internet websites that specialize in selling rubber stamps and rubber stamp designs. When there is a club, there are sure to be many club members who make their own rubber stamp designs, or at the very least know where to find unique hard-to-find designs for rubber stamps. Also, many rubber stamp club members know how to create elaborate works of art using rubber stamps, and will sell or trade their art with other club members. Using such things as multi-colored stamps, very large stamps or very small stamps, people can really turn rubber stamping into an art form.
